Editorial & Review Policy

Buitenzorg: Journal of Tropical Science follows a double-blind peer review process to determine the suitability of manuscripts for publication. The Chief Editor and Section Editors evaluate the submitted papers and assign two or three qualified peer reviewers to evaluate the manuscript. The peer reviewers must examine the manuscript and provide their recommendation to the Chief Editor or Section Editors within 3 weeks. If one of the peer reviewers recommends rejection, the Chief Editor will ask for a third reviewer or Section Editors' decision on acceptance or rejection of the paper. Papers requiring revision will be returned to the authors, who must submit the revised manuscript via OJS of Buitenzorg: Journal of Tropical Science. Section Editors will review the revised manuscript and give a recommendation to the Chief Editor within 2 weeks, whether to return the manuscript to authors, accept, or reject it. After acceptance, the manuscript is forwarded to the technical editor for editing and layout. The Chief Editor will send a letter announcing the publication issue and an invoice attached with PROOF to the authors.

The revision process for authors includes four steps. Firstly, they must revise the manuscript to incorporate suggestions from Section Editors within two weeks of receiving feedback. Secondly, they must revise the manuscript to incorporate suggestions from peer reviewers within 2-4 weeks. Thirdly, they must revise the manuscript to accommodate any additional suggestions from Section Editors within 2-4 weeks, if necessary. Finally, they must revise the manuscript to incorporate suggestions from the editorial meeting within one week, if applicable. Manuscripts that exceed the revision deadline will be withdrawn, but authors may request an extension from the Chief Editor before the deadline expires. The acceptance time for publication may vary based on the length of the review and revision process.

There are three general reasons why manuscripts are rejected. Firstly, the manuscript topic may not be suitable for the journal and may be better suited for publication elsewhere. Secondly, the manuscript content may not meet the standards of Buitenzorg: Journal of Tropical Science, including incomplete data, inappropriate methodology, lack of novelty or failure to advance existing knowledge, and inconsistencies among objectives, research design/method, evidence, and conclusion. Lastly, manuscripts that do not follow the guidelines in the Instructions for Authors may be rejected without review. Additionally, manuscripts may be rejected during the review process if authors fail to revise the manuscript as suggested by reviewers and the editorial board, or if they do not respond to suggestions.
